Kolkata Murder: Police Response to Court Questions.
After a series of questions by the court, the state responded, “There was a mob of around 7,000. The numbers swelled. I have videos. They broke through barricades.
Tear gas was fired and 15 police personnel got injured. The Deputy Commissioner also got injured. Police vehicles got damaged. The emergency room was vandalized by the mob. But the place of occurrence (the crime scene) protected.”
Did the Police Have No Intel About the Protesters?
A bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam asked why permission was given for public protests on such a Volatile issue. “Normally, the police have an intelligence wing… Similar incidents occurred during Hanuman Jayanti. If 7,000 people were to gather, it is hard to believe the police did not know.”
The state responded by stating that the police had not approved any permission for the gathering. However, the High Court refused to let the matter drop, pointing out that Section 144 (Which prohibits large public gatherings in notified areas) was in effect at the time… you should have cordoned off the area,” the police said.
Absolute Failure of State Machinery
“This is an absolute failure of state machinery,” the court thundered. “So, the police couldn’t protect their personnel? How can the doctors work there?”
“Are you talking about measures? What are the preventive measures?” the court also inquired.
We’ll Close Down the Hospital for Kolkata Murder
After a series of questions, the state replied, “We will close down the hospital and shift everyone. How many patients are there?” The court reacted with frustration, and the state quickly assured the court, “The crime scene is secured”.
“Okay… we take your word,” the court finally said, but added, “You should also ashamed! As a resident, it pains me….. it should pain you too.”
Conclusion
Did the police not have any information gathering of the mob, or was this an attempt to destroy any remaining evidence of the murder, to prevent the revelation of more police involvement? Is the police force still trying to cover up the situation to protect someone?
