The people of India are angry with the incident that took place in Kolkata. People started Protesting after rape and brutality happened to a 31-year-old trainee doctor. and the kind of incidents revealed in the reports shook people’s souls.
What had happened?
The Chief Minister of West Bengal has written a letter to PM Modi; she has talked about taking some majors.
Mamata Banerjee expressed concern about the rapes, happening every day within the country. She also added around 90 rape cases get recorded daily.
Kolkata Case: DEMANDS OF CM
In this regard, Mamata Banerjee has made three demands in her letter:
- To deal with such serious and sensitive issues, we will have to bring a very strict law through a stringent central legislature, in which the punishment within it should be very high. There should be maximum punishment so that we can stop such crimes.
- There should be a fast-track special court here so that justice can be provided as soon as possible.
- The trial should start here within 15 days.
NCRB DATA ON RAPE CASES
As per the NCRB, in 2013, the total number of rape cases reported in the country was less than 25,000 in a year, but by 2017, the number had increased to more than 40,000.
Kolkata Case: Need of the hour
Hence Implementation of strict punishment is the need of the hour because in the Nirbhaya case, the Verma Committee report clearly said that we need to establish a more effective response care system for rape and sexual assault.
As a result of which a law was made, which we know as the Nirbhaya Law, and in that law it was said that in the case of gang rape, there will be a punishment of 20 years, and if the person is a repeat offender, then he will be given a death sentence.
Supreme Court Action
Now the Supreme Court itself has taken cognizance and decided to hear this matter and used harsh words on the authorities. because the things were not taken seriously by the authorities.
The incident happened on the morning of 9th August, around 4:00 am, but even before registering the unnatural death, it happened around 6:00 and 7:00 pm. Even if a post-mortem is done, was it an attempt being made deliberately to hide the evidence?
Assurance to Doctors
The Supreme Court also requested all the doctors who were protesting to stop their protest and join back duty and assured them that no action would be taken against them.
Then the resident doctors of AIIMS ended the strike. Next Hearing Now the next hearing will be held in the Supreme Court on the next date. The Kolkata Police officer who made the first entry and registered this entire case will have to be present and tell the exact time when he entered the case.
